Man vs Machine: A2RL Tests AI Racecar Against Daniil Kvyat at Suzuka

The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) held an exciting “Human versus AI” race at Suzuka Circuit in Japan. The showdown was between former F1 driver Daniil Kvyat and a fully-autonomous Artificial Intelligence (AI) – both driving racecars featuring Bcomp technology.

Preceded by an AI vs AI display, the showdown featured Kvyat driving a Super Formula SF23 racecar, competing against the EAV24 AI racing car, which is a highly-modified version of the SF23 equipped with an extensive suite of sensors, cameras, and processors called the ‘autonomous stack’.

Bcomp’s ampliTex™ and powerRibs™ were used in the bodywork construction of both the SF23 and EAV24. Bcomp natural fibre composite technologies were combined with carbon fibre in a 70:30 ratio, only using carbon in areas of high load and structural significance. This approach uses the best of both worlds, showing impressively how to maximise the natural fibre content on the highest level of motorsports.

The Suzuka special exhibition was co-hosted by Japan Race Promotions (JRP), the organisers of Super Formula, and marked the conclusion of A2RL’s international development programme. Prior to the Suzuka testing period, A2RL visited both Imola and Vallelunga in Italy with development driver Juju Noda.

A2RL is the world’s largest autonomous racing series and is about to enter its second season. This pioneering motorsport combines the push for AI innovation with intense on-track action. Each year, engineers, programmers, and scientists come together to develop leading-edge driving AI, ready to compete in a series of challenges and claim their stake in a multi-million-dollar prize pool.
